For
an additional fee, Florida vehicle owners can purchase a specialty license
plate to commemorate an event or to show support to an organization,
college, or special interest group. The majority of the funds collected
for these plates are distributed to the specified agency to enhance their
programs. All Florida specialty plates are approved by the state
legislature.
Florida's 104
specialty plates cost anywhere from $15.00 to $25.00 more than a standard
license plate.
2006 also saw some shuffling
in the ranks. Thanks to National Championships in Basketball and
Football in 2006, the "University of Florida" plate took over the number
one spot, selling 90,436 plates. The "Protect the Panther" sold 87,806
plates last year, but was knocked from it's top spot, ending a four year
reign as number one.
The "Protect Wild
Dolphins"
plate finished in the number three spot for the second time in the past
4 years, finishing just over 2500 out of the number two spot with 85,214.
The number four and the number five spots saw the "Helping Sea
Turtles Survive" (77,856)
and "Florida State University" (74,660).
Rounding out the top 10
sellers were #6 "Save the Manatee"; #7 "Tampa Bay
Buccaneers"; #8 "Choose Life"; #9 "Challenger/Columbia" and #10 "Protect
our Reefs"
